New designs
Seeing as Andy left the band about a year ago, I think it's about time I updated the design of this blog! I'm going to try and get it into the new blogger format so I can start using tags on my posts too. Work starts tomorrow, along with work on updating both my own site and my DD site (again, it's about time on both fronts!).

I'm finally going ASP and DB based on them both. It'll make it quicker and easier to update the content, and it's about time I properly re-developed my sites to show my skills!

So, watch this space for something new! :)

New DD album and single
So, the new Duran Duran album and single are due out next month. The album, Red Carpet Massacre, is due on the 19th, and the first single from the album, Falling Down, is due on the 14th.

Watched the video on Yahoo! Music while tucking in to my lunch yesterday, it's over 6 mins, and in traditional DD style is a mini-film. The video's quite good - a bit odd I suppose but good. I quite like the single too, but need to hear it properly... i.e. without distractions! I should get that chance tonight as they're on Friday Night with Jonathon Ross. The guys were also on Entertainment Today this morning, apparently. There's a bit of a press hoo-haa about the video, apparently it's 'been banned from UK TV'... in actual fact they had a couple of scenes cut so it can be aired. I couldn't help feeling a bit like I was in a time warp though... after all, the Girls on Film video was banned, and still means the Greatest DVD is 18 rated!

Anyway, can't wait to see the interview and Rossy's show later on (or more likely over the weekend!).

Best birthday of my life? You bet!
Paul got me tickets to see Erasure at the Auditorium on my birthday! He knew I wanted to see them, but we found out that Onetwo were supporting, so it became a must have pressie!
We had decided on Wednesday night that it wouldn't be a good idea for him to come with me to the gig, as he's been having severe leg cramps for a few months now. So I invited a friend of mine to take up my spare ticket. Throughout Thursday and Friday we made our plans via email. I told him Onetwo were supporting, explained who they were (and that I would possibly be an embarassment as I have their album and know most of the songs) and I sent him the link to their MySpace page. First thing he said, even before hearing anything by them, was 'Thank god for that, a decent support band. Usually it's some unknown shite band'!

I asked my boss if I could leave work early and he agreed. So, my friend and I made arrangements to meet at the venue at 5:30 - 2 hours in the queue, but plenty of time to catch up as we haven't seen each other for ages. I left work at 4:15, got back into town at 5:00 and walked up to the venue. I expected it to take a good 25-30 mins to get there, but by 5:15 I'd arrived! There were only about 10 people in front of me, so I was really pleased! I thought we were guaranteed front row... unfortunately I was wrong! Once we moved into the foyer we formed two queues at the entrances. Trust me to pick the wrong one! When our doors opened it became obvious that the others had opened a short while before us. Most of the people on the front row I hadn't even seen in the queue - I was a bit annoyed at that, but I was 2nd row, and right in front of Paul's lovely Roland. So far so good, almost to plan!

I have to admit that I was quite surprised at the set up though. There was a big curtain with a mic stand in the centre of the stage and a Roland with Apple laptop on each side. Only one had a mic, so that was obviously Pauls! But the thing that surprised me was that we could just about see part of the main set poking out from under the curtain, and the curtain was so close to the front of the stage that the front foot of Paul's mic stand was just hanging off the edge of the stage! If I'd been front row I could probably have just about reached over and touched it! And there wasn't much space behind the synths and mics! I know that the Auditorium is a smallish venue, but I had no idea just how small that stage is!

Anyway, there we all were, waiting patiently for things to begin, getting hotter and hotter. I'm sure they put the heating on in that place to try and make everyone buy more drinks! Then the guy who plays live with Claudia and Paul popped on stage putting out water bottles and making sure everything was set up. There was a guy in front and just off to the right of me who'd been to another show this tour who shouted out 'It's Onetwo!'. He popped back off stage, the lights went down, and then he came back out, followed by Claudia and Paul. Poor Claudia nearly tripped over that bit of set I mentioned poking out from under the curtain. But, with a bit of assistance from Paul, she made it safely across - while the audience politely applauded. Paul introduced themselves as Onetwo (no mention of OMD or Propaganda - which is fair enough), said something on the lines of 'Crikey, it's very cramped up here' (which got a laugh, because we were very cramped down there too!) and introduced the first track - Theory of Everything (although he didn't mention the 'Part two' part of the title, but those in the know knew as soon as they started playing). I, being the mad fool I am, cheered really loudly as soon as he finished saying the title - and I think I was almost the only one in the whole place who did!! I'm sure that Paul looked at me, acknowledged me and smiled - almost with a look of regconition (seeing as I was in virtually the same place as when I'd caught his eye with my Air Synths playing back in June!)... A woman about three across to my right in the front row turned round and said "D'you like this one then?" "Oh yes, it's one of my favourites!" I replied excitedly - I think I'd marked my cards there and then as being there as much to see Onetwo as Erasure! Not that anyone minded - thankfully! Anyway, I sang along to every song off the album, whooped and applauded every intro and every song and bascially probably made a bit of an idiot of myself! But the best was yet to come on that score!

After Theory they moved into Kein Anschluss, the moment the brrs of the telephone started I just smiled broadly and nodded my head. Then Paul introduced Signals, saying "this one's in English" which got a bit of a laugh from everyone. After that it gets a bit hazy for me on the order, but they played (I think in this order) Sequence, Duel (which Paul introduced by saying that with Claudia being from Propaganda it wouldn't be right to not play this one! I think that was the only mention of either one's other bands), Club Country (with Paul explaining that they'd made a promise to play a Billy MacKenzie song everytime they play live this year), Cloud 9 (which got a big cheer for the mention of Martin Gore co-writing it). By the time they played Duel the audience were really getting into their music, and to be honest that probably got the biggest applause after - in fact Claudia actually looked almost embarrassed at how well it had gone down! She really seemed to appreciate the applause. And it was well deserved! She sounded wonderful that night - and better on Duel than I remember it! Oh, and that answered my question about which Propaganda song it was I remembered! I can't remember if they played Vision in the Sky or not, there's a nagging voice in my head saying yes they did, but then there's another voice saying no!

Anyway, by the time they came to the end of the set there was quite a strong 'Noooo!' and 'Ohhhhhh' from the audience, which seemed to really please Paul & Claudia. Paul said "You really are too kind" and continued by introducing their last track, Home and I just shouted at the top of my voice 'YES!' and punched the air! The silence around me at that time was almost deafening! I could've sworn Paul looked straight at me and smiled and I just put my head down looking more than a little embarrassed! A lady two across to my left this time on the front said "I take it you like this one then?" "It's my favourite one on their album" I replied! At one point during their set I'm sure Claudia shot me a look too - and not a bad one, more of an acknowledgement of a fan, a thank you sort of look. And that was it. They were finished and leaving the stage, to great applause from the audience (after having, of course, told the audience they can buy the album from the band's website). It was over all too soon, and a part of me couldn't help wishing that they were the top billing for the night! Claudia had sounded wonderful, Paul had been fantastic on the synths, (and as you'll see from one of my pics he was really feeling the heat too - as he mentioned at one point, to much agreement from the masses!), and the other guy was brilliant on the guitar. I really can't describe how perfect they sounded. Not a single duff note from anyone, and to have the pleasure of hearing all those tracks I love so much from the album live was incredible. If Erasure had been a disappointment I would still have had a wonderful evening!

As Onetwo's kit was being cleared, 'the other guy' (as he's become known) came out to help. He grabbed the laptop on his synth and one end of the synth, and as he and the roadie carried it off I shouted up to him 'You should send Paul out to get his one!'. He just laughed and shook his head with a sort of 'You'll be lucky!' look. I can't believe I let myself go like that - and without the aid of alcohol!

So... after another wait around finally the main part of the show started. And Erasure were phenomenal. I'd only ever seen a live performance on VHS before, 'The Circus' tour. So I had an idea of what to expect, but wondered if they'd really live up to my expectations. Well, this is one person who really wasn't disappointed by anything that night! They were really on form. The show was fantastic. Andy was cracking jokes, the backing singers were beautiful and did their job brilliantly, and Vince was - well... Vince was Vince! He's sort of developed this Kraftwerk non-emotional, non-moving act to a tee. But every so often he does something a bit unexpected - like bringing a can of beer out, and interacting with 'Mint Sauce' (you'll have to watch my video of Oh L'amour to see her!)... and cracking a smile and laughing at something or other as he left the stage for the costume change! Oh, and the costume change was very neat! Personally I loved the music and could've just watched an empty stage without any bother, but they have these video screens and all of a sudden this long message starts appearing on the screens to keep everyone amused! Their set was a nice mix of tracks from the new album and a good selection of the classics to keep fans like me happy! And making me even happier, Vince got the guitar out for Sometimes and one other oldie (can't remember off the top of my head which one!). The audience really enjoyed themselves, it was such a great show. Plenty of sing along moments too.

In the end I took quite a few photos - well, in reality I took about 4 times as many as I got. I was having problems with the borrowed camera again, this time the thing is so old that it's probably on it's last legs. It seemed that I was cursed! Everytime I took a really good photo of Claudia or Paul the damn thing would refuse to save it, and in the end I only have about 5 good ones! That's the problem with having such short time for a support act, and I don't think the lighting helped either! Being so close to the front of the stage, and bearing in mind that the lighting is set up really for the main band, it really wasn't perfect for photography. I was so busy fighting with the damn thing that I didn't think to grab my phone and video anything they played! I seemed to calm down and get my head into gear more for Erasure though, and I recorded clips from Ship of Fools and Blue Savannah for my hubby (they're his two fave Erasure tracks) and I managed to record the whole of Oh L'amour for myself. I'm really quite pleased with those, they're quite steady (bearing in mind that I had to hold my phone in the air to get them, because of avoiding heads in front of me!) and the sound quality is excellent! Hubby watched them on the computer and said he could hear me singing along on Oh L'amour, but only because he knows my voice so well, and we could both make out me whooping at the end of it! I got loads of decent pics of Erasure though, mainly because I'd got to grips with the camera more, and also because the lighting was so much better!

Once the gig was over, after Erasure's single song encore (have to admit that's the first encore I've ever seen with just one song!) of Stop! everyone started filing out. I turned to my friend and said 'Shall we go round to the back door and see if we can get autographs?'. To my amazement he agreed! So, we headed straight for the back doors... I hadn't had time to dig out my tapes of The Innocents and Wild! that morning, so I only had my ticket for Andy & Vince to sign, but I'd also brought my CD of Instead, just in case Paul & Claudia were still there!

I actually had the nerve to go up to one of the security guys and ask if Onetwo were still around! Apparently they'd gone ages ago (which I'd sort of expected). We still stuck around - I texted hubby to say 'We're loitering!'. Then at about 11:20 Andy & Vince came out. There were quite a few people there, and they both made sure that everyone who wanted an autograph and/or photo got what they wanted, and they had a word or two for everyone. I got Andy's auotgraph and photo first, and said something about 'thank you for a great birthday night'. Andy said "Glad you enjoyed it", then I scooted over to Vince and seem to remember garbling something about it being my birthday, how much I'd enjoyed myself that night, and that it was a fantastic show (I know that when I get excited - and I was very excited then - I talk reallyreallyfastlikethis and my native Kent accent comes out more... Dad always says I sound like a country yokel being played on the wrong speed!) Anyway, Vince obviously got the gist of what I said at least, and said "I'm really glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for coming to see us". And then after the photo that was it... we headed home. One thing I noticed was that most people were more interested in Andy than Vince, but me being me was most chuffed at meeting Vince! Ah well... that's us Synths fans for you! lol They're both really nice guys too, they have a lot of time for their fans, and are one of those bands that treat fans with respect.

Got home about midnight, barely ate and barely slept because I was so excited, and I've been on a high ever since! One of my neighbours relatives was round there a couple of days ago when I popped in to see her, and he said "You're still buzzing now! I can tell!" Everyone at work was really chuffed for me too today!

As predicted when I heard Onetwo were supporting, that was definately the best birthday of my life! It could only have been bettered by meeting Paul & Claudia and getting my CD signed!

I'll be posting some photos later on.... :)

Perseids? What Perseids?
Popped out into the back garden last night to see if I could spot anything of the expected meteor shower - which all the news broadcasts were saying would be visible from 10pm onwards... I stood there for about 5-10 minutes in my dressing gown, and didn't spot a thing! As I had to be up at 6 this morning I decided not to wait out there any longer and headed off to bed. I guessed I was probably looking in the wrong direction, and having had a look on the BBC news website it seems I probably was! I guess, looking at this that the best spot to see them will be from the back bedroom! I might try again tonight, although it seems the best show around 2am - far too late for me!

I wasn't entirely disappointed by it, living in the middle of town there's so much light pollution that sometimes it's hard to see the stars. But, once your eyes become accustomed to the lighting conditions you can pick out quite a lot on a clear night like last night.

And why am I getting up at 6am? I hear you ask... the car failed it's MOT last week! And the garage we took it to say it needs about £800 of work on it! So, until we get a 2nd opinion, or get it fixed, I'm having to use the bus to get to work. I have to be at the bus station for 7:20am and get back there at about 6:20pm. It makes for a long day, but at least I can get to work!

News...
Finally bought my own domain! About bloomin' time too! I'll try to get my OMD photos up there over the weekend... my fancy Javascript picture viewer gets screwed up by the way the free hosting on fortunecity works!

And... the big news of the week is...

Onetwo are supporting Erasure on their August/September tour of Germany and the UK! Why's that big news? Well... Paul agreed to take me to see Erasure in Grimsby - they're playing on my birthday! Yes... 7th September they're here in Grimsby! I was quite excited about that as it was, but to hear that Onetwo are supporting them has really made my day! I can't wait! If Paul lets me down though, I will be seriously pissed off! I've been thinking how much I'd love to see Onetwo live over the last couple of weeks, so this really is sweet news!

Did I mention that I'm a bit excited? LOL

Got to make sure we get front row again, and that I get right in front of Paul H! I have no doubt whatsoever that I'll end up playing air synths again! Oh... and I must make sure that I take my camera this time! I'd like really good shots... I should imagine that they'll be further to the front of the stage being the support act! All the better for me!

Social networking...
Seems I've been caught by the social networking bug! I've finally given in and signed up for a MySpace account, although it's taking me an age to do anything with it! I actually don't like MySpace, but if I sign up I can get access to more bits and pieces on some band spaces (like OMD, Duran Duran and Onetwo).

Got an invite from Chi (a friend I've made through the OMD forum) to joing Facebook. I've only got one friend at the moment, which is a bit sad really! But, I'm hoping that once I've 'met the family' properly I'll be able to add more friends from the forum... plus some of the girls at work are on it too. I'm busy playing and finding out what I can do! I want to get one of the photos they took for the work website to put on there, but I feel a bit foolish asking! Facebook seems a lot more logical to me. It's much easier to customise and add things to.

I'm also a member of the OMD fan community social network. It's really new, and I was among a small group of about 10 people who took up the opportunity to beta test it. It's really nice and easy to use. Plus it's only filled with OMD fans! I've made quite a few friends there, it seems. Nice bunch of people - all on the official forum, but we mainly talk on the unofficial forum (it's a bit friendlier there, people are less precious! Not that I dislike the official forum). It's getting really hard to keep up with everything these days, but I'm trying!

Set list & my personal top 10 OMD tracks
Well, it's taken a while, but I've finally got the set list from the current OMD tour!

Architecture And Morality
Sealand
The New Stone Age
Georgia
She's Leaving
Souvenir
Joan Of Arc
Maid Of Orleans
The Beginning And The End
Messages
Tesla Girls
(Forever) Live And Die
If You Leave
Pandora's Box
Talking Loud And Clear
So In Love
Locomotion
Sailing On The Seven Seas
Enola Gay
Walking On The Milky Way
Electricity
The Romance Of The Telescope

I didn't do too badly, with the exception of the A&M tracks!

Ordered the A&M + DVD set from HMV on the 29th... after checkout I spotted that the first 2 albums and the 4th one are in the sale at the moment, at under a fiver each. So I ordered those too. They shipped on Tuesday of last week - but it was really wierd. They picked them in a wierd order and each item was charged separately, so when they arrived they were all individually packaged! What a waste of cardboard! How ironic too that the first should arrive on Saturday, Live Earth day! Even more strange was that the last item charged was the first to arrive!

Anyway, they're all here now, and I've listened to them all. Out of the four, A&M is my favourite. Not just because of the live set, but because musically it does more for me than the others. There's an experimentalism there, but there's also a more cohesive sound. I simply adore the title track. It's instrumental, and it has a common grammar with much of the rest of the album. There are melodic hints of Maid of Orleans and Joan of Arc, and it's beautifully put together. No wonder I was blown away by it live!

Came up with my personal OMD top 10 today - I did it a couple of weeks back, but some lovely person decided to hack the official website forum, and my account was lost. It took me a while, because I've been listening to so many albums recently, but I stand by this list (for the moment!) Number 1 is always number 1 for me... 2-4 stay pretty much the same, but sometimes they switch positions with each other, 5-10 are completely changeable!

1 - Souvenir
2 - Secret
3 - Enola Gay
4 - Southern
5 - Architecture & Morality
6 - Genetic Engineering
7 - Bunker Soldiers
8 - Maid of Orleans
9 - La Femme Accident
10 - Pandora's Box

I make no apologies for having Southern in my top 4, even though it appears that I'm in a minority for liking that particular track! What made me chuckle was the post after mine:
"That is such a bizarre Top ten Air. Nice one."

Seems I'm one for being a bit different - what with playing Air synths (no prizes for guessing my username on the forums!) and my somewhat eclectic top 10! I've noticed that there is generally a commonality of periods for most people's top 10s. I've yet to work out what the common denominator is in mine! But I happen to adore all those tracks. I've decided that - with the exception of Southern as I don't have that on cd - I'm going to put that listing on my mp3 player to see how odd it sounds together, or if I can spot the common theme!

Had a bit of luck yesterday too. I've been trying to replace Paul's VHS of 'The Best of...' for months now, I bid on a couple towards the end of last week, but got outbid both times. I finally got one yesterday - 99p + £2.25 p&p! Bargain! Can't wait for that to arrive... we used to have quite a laugh watching the videos... partly because you could always guess the year by Paul H's hairstyle!

Talking of 'Best of' and forums, on the unofficial forum there's an art thread. A dutch member posted a nice drawing of Andy on there, which actually inspired me to pick up my pencil and sketchbook and do something I've been thinking about doing for a while. A sketch of Paul H. I would say a quick sketch, but that's not the case when I'm doing faces! I've always had trouble with them. But this time I stuck at it and I'm pretty pleased with the result. It probably helped that I chose my absolute favourite photo of him to work from, so I wasn't at all bothered about sitting looking at it over and over! It still took me two days and 5 sittings to do though!

Had a look around yesterday for something about the band that Paul H formed with Claudia Brucken from Propaganda, onetwo. Found the website of their record label there[there]. Wasn't too sure from the samples on there, but ended up on their MySpace and for the first time ever I could almost see the point of it! There were a good selection of clips which made me want to buy the album, and a nice photo gallery thing, which had links under it to the photographers - one of them, Daniela Vorndran has some fantastic live shots of them on her website. She's also got some lovely OMD shots there too!

I'm still in a bit of shock that I still have the hots for Mr Humphreys! I think it's got a lot to do with him being such a hero for me, but despite the fact he's put on a few pounds (haven't we all) and his hairs not quite what it was I still find him really, really attractive, and rather sexy! Still, I guess that's not a bad thing in some ways as it shows I don't just get attracted by skin deep beauty, but by a beauty from inside! Part of it's the music - he's still a genius with synths (and now uses emulators of some of the analogue synths he's used in the past! I want some of that!), part of it is that he has a lovely voice that's matured nicely and that I've always loved to hear singing, and then when I see pics like this one with his lovely smile I feel all warm inside! Whatever it is, he's definately still got it - at least as far as I'm concerened. Yet I daren't say anything to my Paul. I nearly did a couple of weeks ago, but his reaction made me have second thoughts. When your partner says "that's sick!" at the thought of you having a crush on a particular person you tend to shut up!

Paul's birthday

Well, Paul's birthday is 6 days away (at the time of starting this post) and he's already had his pressie. About 5 weeks or so ago I found out that OMD were going to be at the Auditorium on the 18th June, as part of their Greatest Hits tour - being 10 days before Paul's birthday, and as OMD are in their original lineup (who Paul last saw live in 81 or 83) I thought that tickets to see them would make a great birthday pressie for him. And I was right! Despite having fractured ribs (long story!) he thoroughly enjoyed it.

The doors opened at 7pm, although they let us in a bit early as it was starting to rain, and I headed straight for the queue for the standing area (I would only ever go for standing tickets since seeing DD at Sheffield Arena way back in 2004 - gosh... is it that long ago?? But with standing you have to be there early! Thankfully, the Grimsby audience is a bit slow to turn up, so 6:30 outside the Auditorium was early enough). When the doors opened, Paul and the guys (we took two of our friends along with us) were stunned at how fast I darted to the front. I was determined to get right in the front row - and I made it! Just! There was space for a little one (thank god I've not put on that much weight) right on the barrier, directly opposite Paul Humphreys synths!

Now, if you don't know me that well you won't know that

  1. I had a huge crush on Paul Humphreys in the 80s
  2. Paul Humphreys is one of my all-time synths/keyboards heroes, and probably the main synths player to inspire me learn to play the Piano, but always with a view to having a synthesizer of my own and learning to play that - believe me, there's a huge difference between playing a Piano and playing the synths!
  3. I have a tendency to play Air Synths when listening to OMD's music - probably more so than when listening to any other band! Something you need to bear in mind for later on...

So, as you can guess, I managed to get into the perfect spot for me! My Paul was stood behind me (he jokingly said that as it was his present he should be in the front, but I did point out that I'm shorter and he could easily see over my head), and our friends were to his left. I got chatting to a lady next to me, who's about my age and had - like me - missed out on seeing all the great bands of the 80s because she was too young. It turns out that she'd also been to see DD in '04 but saw them at Manchester and was gutted when she later found out that she'd missed seeing the Scissor Sisters as support. Anyway, she'd seen OMD at Liverpool, and said they still had it. She told me a little bit about the support act, Lovers Electric, and said 'Don't laugh too loudly, but she brings on a little kids toy piano'. Weird, I thought.

About 8pm Lovers Electric came on stage. A guy and a gal from Oz. He carried on his acoustic guitar in it's case, she carried on a red vanity case - which was just like my ballet case from when I was a lot younger. As she opened it up she brought out this little red toy piano and attached a cable to it. Now, I know how this sounds... but you have to believe me, it worked really well! The music was a bit quirky, and they use a Casio MT (with equalizer no less... prompting a big 'wowie!' from yours truly in proper audience participation mode!!) which they picked up on Ebay, but it all worked brilliantly! They both have fantastic voices, and I really hope that they sell lots of albums at the shows. They need to get them out there another way though, because loads of people have been reluctant to leave their front-of-stage positions to buy a copy and meet them. I would've loved to, but there was no way I was giving up my position! Not after - well, let's just say a lot more than 20 and not many less than 30 - years waiting to see OMD! Check them out on You Tube, they really are great!

So, after their brilliant set, Lovers Electric left the stage and the guys all came on to make sure that OMDs kit was all ok. And that's when the fun started... first off everything seemed to be going well. The drums were fine - very loud bass drum, definitely audible. The Synths had a dust down and a wipe over... all the time I kept thinking 'I know you know what you're doing, but for god's sake don't knock a single dial or button' while the guy was cleaning Paul's synth! We spotted blue Listerine and what looked like Baby wipes on the side, my Paul's positive that Martin Cooper's synths only got a dust off, whilst Paul's got a dust and a clean with the Baby wipes!

The mics were fine (we were close enough to spot that Andy was written on one of the radio packs (if I remember that was on green tape) and Paul on another (on red tape)). There was no feedback, all was going well... until the guy who'd checked the mics did a second check on the drums, and there was nothing picking up from the Bass drum - it sounded to tinny! My Paul keep muttering, 'it helps if you switch it on'. Now, while they were trying to sort that out, the big screen at the back was being tested.

I've heard that it's not an OMD gig if something doesn't go wrong, but I didn't realise that included set-up! One of the panels making up the screen wasn't working, so there was a big black rectangle in the middle of the test. Now, if this had been at the bottom of the screen they probably could have got away with it, but it wasn't. I suppose it could have been worse, but not much! It was in the middle, about 3 blocks from the top... so really visible. Cue guy with a stepladder and a headband torch climbing up the back to fix it. The whole screen wobbled as he climbed up, and in the end we probably had a good 15 mins entertainment watching him try and fix it... dropping parts, nearly getting it, then taking it out again (to very loud boos from the audience - prompting the rest of the crew to come out to see what was going on!), then fixing it again, then moving it again, until eventually it was all ok and he climbed back down the ladder (to huge cheers). Meanwhile they sorted out the Bass drum (to more cheers). I would hate to be the crew member who had to fix that screen though... I have a funny feeling he probably got a lot of stick from everyone that night!

Anyway, later than planned the lights went down, the screen went into action and the music began... we were treated to the title track from Architecture & Morality (which was nicely accompanied by arty Architecture photos - see what they did there?). After that the guys came on stage - well, all except Andy, who followed on a little bit later.

Unfortunately I have a confession to make here... I saw Mal Holmes and he's changed so much that not only did I recognise him, but for a few milliseconds I wondered what one of the roadies was doing coming on!!! How embarrassing! Anyway, Andy came on stage and the guys started the show with some of the A&M set - that was the arty & cultural part of the show, which I had no objections to. I think a large number of the crowd weren't expecting any A&M (other than the singles, of course), so were a bit thrown, but I threw myself into it... whooping and going barmy after everything! The guys caught me out though.

I didn't have my own digital camera available that night, so I borrowed one from a neighbour and had noticed that it had a video mode, so I decided that I was going to video 'Souvenir' (as that's my all-time favourite OMD song). They sneaked it up on me! And it took me a few seconds from going mental cheering that it was being played to realise I hadn't started recording! Still, I got myself sorted and didn't miss too much of it. I was really good and didn't have any camera shake, no singing either (although that felt really weird!). Paul sounded fantastic, although the mix on his mic sounded a bit low, but he's always had a quiet, although totally beautiful, voice. I was just so happy to have finally seen him singing it live! When they finished I whooped and cheered like a loon, stopped the recording and joined the applause. Unfortunately, I found out when we got home that the camera doesn't have a built in mic, so all I got was vision with no sound!!! Talk about frustrating! Still, the main thing is - I was there! He was right in front of me singing and playing, and sounding great!

Unfortunately it's now a week on, and I'm still writing this post, so I've completely lost track of what was played when! They played 'She's leaving', 'Souvenir' and went from 'Joan of Arc' straight to 'Maid of Orleans' from A&M and there were more tracks from A&M too - although I can't remember what. Part way through the A&M set Andy said for anyone who hadn't seen them before, they start off with the arty stuff then it all goes downhill from there. So when they finished the A&M set Andy told us that that was the end of the arty, cultural, part of the evening, and now it was going to be hits all the way.

As I've said, I can't remember the set list in order, but they played:

  • Messages
  • Locomotion
  • Sailing on the seven seas
  • If you leave
  • So in love
  • Pandora's box
  • (Forever) Live and die
  • Enola gay
  • Talking loud and clear
  • Tesla girls

Then for an encore they played:

  • Walking on the milky way
  • Electricity
  • The romance of the telescope

and Paul thinks there was another one between Electricity and TROTT.

The lady next to me, who I think is known as striped-tomato on the OMD forum, and I were taking loads of photos. I took about 57 (I think), although only 12 were even half decent - I'm used to a camera which you can set to replicate different film ISOs and which you can adjust the shutter speed on etc to replicate an SLR more effectively, unfortunately the camera I borrowed didn't seem to have all those functions - but then again it took me about 15 mins to find the flash control on it, so it was probably me, and I'm not complaining as I could have been there with no camera - or worse still I could have not been there at all! Anyway, Andy noticed that we were taking photos and kept popping our way and posing for us - shame I was a bit slow with getting my camera running, I kept missing out on some great shots! He's a great showman, and if you've never seen them live you really have missed out. He does completely mad dancing (at one point he said "Still got no dignity, but I can't help myself"), and now I can see why he has described it as being like 'an epileptic windmill'! I've got a great shot where he seems to be vogueing on the left while the rest of the guys are playing. I'll pop the pics on at the end of this post!

As I've already said, I was bopping around, clapping, singing and generally being my usual excited self! I just can't help myself! I can't really remember just how nuts I was, but I do remember that I was really going for it during 'If you leave' - I kind of go into singer-mode and do all these hand things during the chorus ('I touch you once, I touch you twice')... exactly the same as Andy did! (which was a bit embarrassing, but there you have it!). After 'If you leave' Andy introduced 'Pandora's Box', and I went really nuts! In fact, I think I must've given the biggest reaction of the entire audience to that one! I never really thought that I'd hear that one live, and I've loved it since I first heard it. So I gave a really genuine, hearfelt, excited cheer! I was really bopping about during the chorus, too!

When Paul came down from his synths for '(Forever) Live and die' I was stunned, and ended up taking more photos than for any other song - although the camera shake on those was worse than any other shots! I guess I still have a thing for Paul... even though he's changed quite a lot. I never, ever, thought that I'd see him leave his synths for the front of the stage! And I never thought I'd see Andy on synths! Such a shame that I didn't get any decent photos. Had a chuckle the next day when I remembered that I did exactly the same thing on the trumpet 'ba-da's as Paul. Little understated motions, while Andy was at the synths doing big gestures!

Basically, I was a complete loon! My Paul and I sort of did a little dancey thing to 'Locomotion', maybe we should've practiced, but we had fun! I keep smiling whenever I listen to that now though, because I can picture Paul Humphreys playing the steel drum solo on the synths... I don't know why, but that had never struck me before! For 'Talking loud and clear' Andy sat on one of the monitor speakers at the front of the stage, facing our way, and I got some nice pics from that. My Paul did a scarecrow thing behind me, as the song is affectionately called 'The scarecrow song' after the video (dunno why we bother, as that's about as long as the real title!).

I think I got most embarrassed during 'Enola Gay' though... well, I think it was during that, it could've been earlier, but Paul said he remembers particularly 'Enola Gay' for this! At one point I suddenly became aware that I was playing Air Synths... now, as I've already mentioned, I tend to do this a lot with OMD songs, mainly because Paul H is one of my heroes, and when I get a few moments to myself (which isn't very often) I like to get the cds out and pick out some of the synth parts to some of their stuff. But, I now seem to have a habit of just playing air synths as practice - if my hands aren't busy doing something else (and sometimes, like now, I find that typing while listening to OMD is a bit touch and go, as my hands start going in to synths mode!). The thing is, I seemed to suddenly realise that I'd been playing air synths for a bit and suddenly realised that Paul Humphreys was right opposite me and could actually see me... playing my dodgy air synths! I think I suddenly developed a 'deer in the headlights' look, and very quickly looked away and stopped myself. Talking with my Paul the next day he confirmed that I was indeed playing air synths to 'Enola Gay', and the reason I'd got so embarrassed was because Paul Humphreys had indeed spotted what I was up to, looked straight at me, and smiled at me! I thought it was my imagination, some sort of defence mechanism telling me to stop being such an embarrassing idiot... but it seems it was real! Part of me thinks that's pretty cool - because not many people play air synths, so it's a different way to be noticed, and it shows that I'm into my synths too - but part of me is so embarrassed by it! In a way I wish we'd stayed after the show to see if we could get to meet the guys, but having been spotted playing air synths I'm quite glad we didn't! The trouble is, I can't help myself.. I just get into the music and that's one of my ways of appreciating it! Odd as that may sound.

Anyhow, the concert was amazing! When they came back on for the encore I was over the moon that they did 'Walking on the milky way', although part of me wishes that Andy had come over our side at the end, as I always, always, always sing the female vocal at the end - always have, always will - and apparently he does try to get someone to sing it! Maybe next time? They followed Milky way with 'Electricity' which was really cool to see live, and finished the set with 'The romance of the telescope' which was the b-side of 'Joan of Arc'. At one point early on Andy turned to the others and said 'See, it's not so scary!', and he also told us at another point that they'd never played Grimsby before, and that they would definately have to come back! Guess who went nuts!! Yep... me! Here's hoping!

So that was it... I think it was about 11:15ish when we left. We were amongst the last to leave the auditorium itself, and if it had just been Paul and myself, and if he hadn't had fractured ribs, we probably would have stuck around and hung out at the 'back doors' to catch the guys. With his ribs as they were, although he would've loved to stick around he didn't feel well enough. Bopping with fractured ribs is not a comfortable, or sensible, thing! Plus, we had lifts home to sort out for our friends who came with us. Frustratingly I've now found out that the guys are more than happy to sign things for fans who take the trouble to wait after the show, or are outside after the soundcheck - and that includes Paul, who I had thought would not have been comfortable with that whole aspect of things. Still... I guess that's something we can do another time. As long as they stick together and tour again!

Next day Paul and I were still so hyper from it that we wanted to see if we could go see them again soon... as it turned out the next nearest concert was at Nottingham on Thursday 21st, but that was a bit too early for us. Paul is talking about trying to get tickets for the final concert, on the final day of the Summer Pops festival in Liverpool, but I doubt we'll be able to get those...

The most important thing though is that we both really enjoyed ourselves, the guys were brilliant, and I've now seen OMD live... the real OMD too!

I have to admit that I've been on the OMD forum since the concert, and I was really disappointed by the comments from a couple of people who went. They basically said that the Grimsby audience were rubbish, and didn't deserve an encore, and that the place was half empty and no-one was dancing... to be honest, I wondered if they'd been to the same concert as me! Each to their own I guess, but I got the feeling the guys enjoyed themselves. Unfortunately those comments have now led to the rest of the forum basically slating Grimsby, and saying things like 'as Grimsby showed if you have a flat audience, you get a flat performance'... but I didn't think we got a flat performance, and I didn't think we were a flat audience! Only way to find out would be to ask the guys, but they seem to be steering clear of that thread - and as it's taking forever to get my account activated I can't get involved!

I promised some photos, didn't I? Well, here are the best of the ones I took:

Not great, I know... not a patch on my DD ones, I'm afraid, but still some reminders of a great night!

So much for all my good intentions!
I've not exactly keep up with all those things I was planning on doing, particularly updating this blog on a regular basis - but I do have an excuse... I've had a particularly bad virus which made me really ill for a long time. Plus things have been really busy at work and home.

Anyway, time for a quick update.

The Mister Saxon 'mystery' has been revealed on Doctor Who - as most of the OG forum (including me) guessed, he's The Master. So yah boo to Paul who thought that was too obvious! Blimey... some of the clues were so clever that despite being really close to the truth of things, I actually missed some elements! Looking back some of them are blindingly obvious... but I can't wait to see how the last two episodes turn out. There is one thing which is bugging me though - Mister Saxon is The Master in regenerated Time Lord form right? So how is it that in all the times that The Doctor has been in the same timeframe and on Earth (Love and Monsters, The Runaway Bride, Smith & Jones, The Lazurus Project), how the heck did the Doctor not 'feel' the presence of another Time Lord? The 9th Doctor told Rose in Dalek that he would know if there were any others, he'd feel their presence in his head. But there's been nothing... I hope that's not something that RTD has inadvertantly missed (although that' unlike him). I suspect that there will be some kind of explanation in the next two episodes. And as much as I like John Simm (double squeeage with him and David Tennant on screen at the same time, how will I control myself?), and as much as I think he's going to make a good Master, I do hope that they don't overuse him. Unfortunately that was something that the character suffered from in the Classic series.

Still, time will tell.

Babies and flu!
If you ever have a flu jab, don't expect to not go down with flu! I had a jab at the beginning of the year, and yet 4 weeks ago I went down with a really bad bout of the flu! I've only been back at work for a week now, but thankfully they've been great here. I can't believe how bad I was, it was nearly three weeks, and I've still got a terrible cough (as is normal with me!). I don't think I've had flu like that for a good 3 or 4 years! Still, I'm feeling better now. Which means that we've finally been able to pop over to see our new niece!

We went over last night (after about 2 months of trying!). She's lovely, and seems to content and even tempered - although apparently when she has a paddy she really goes for it! She's a bit like Maggie from the Simpsons though, because she's permanently sucking on a dummy, and - just like Maggie - when you take it out she carries on with the sucking motion! Paul felt a bit guilty afterwards that he'd hogged her, but I think everyone knew that he was just making up for lost time. Grandma and Grandpa have little 'fights' over her... everyone loves her to pieces, and she's going to be a spoilt little girl! That said, I still don't want any of my own.

The best show on telly ever... is back!
My sky subscription may be on suspension, I may have missed virtually all of the second series of Life on Mars, and I may have missed most of the latest series of 24 and BSG, but... things aren't all bad!

Yes...

Doctor Who is back on telly...

Three episodes in, and I'm really enjoying the new series so far. Although I'm a bit frustrated that they're revealing the words/phrases/theme of the series through Confidential, but it's back! And Confidential is now 45 mins too!

Episode 1 was a bit of a let down in some respects, as we were convinced from the trailers that the Judoon (platoon on the moon - sorry, had to say it!) were Sontarans. But it was an ok intro to Martha, and had a nice moment in the TARDIS where the Doctor mimes Martha's 'it's bigger on the inside'... nice touch from DT there! Not too keen on the large family of Martha's and I do hope that Russell doesn't bring us back to them too often... Jackie, Mickey & Pete all had reasons for being involved (as it turned out), but I can't see that the same will work for this large family. All I could think was that if I had a family like that I'd jump at the chance of escaping in the TARDIS!

Episode 2 was brilliant. Not least for it's knowledgable references to Shakespeare's plays (including the lost play, Love's labours won!). I really enjoyed the 'yes, you can have that one' moments when the Doctor quoted lines from Shakespeare's future plays. I thought that the way that the Doctor keeps shunning Martha, albeit unconciously, was really well played and written too. We all know that there was a real connection between the Doctor and Rose, and it's quite interesting to see a modern approach to the Doctor losing a companion.

Episode 3 was intriguing, and not a bad RTD story. I liked the comparisons to how we, and the Doctor, remember New Earth, and the insight into the undercity. The Face of Boe finally had his chance to deliver the much-anticipated (and well predicted) final words to the Doctor... "You are not alone". Simply stated, without any hammy overacting, and leaving the Doctor with a look of shock, surprise, astonishment, and yet disbelief. The final scene was really nice too, and really indicated how different the relationship between the Doctor and Rose was from the one developing between the Doctor and Martha. And it also showed how different Martha is from Rose. Not only is she more mature from the outset, and more intelligent (I think maybe I should say more academic?), she doesn't suffer fools gladly, and refuses to be treated like a child. And, as a long-term fan, I was so pleased that RTD used phrases from previous references to Gallifrey, and also added his own description of the planet. I nearly blubbed when DT mentioned the silver leaves on the trees!

It would seem that there are two things we need to follow this year... Mr Saxon (who is played by John Simm) and the truth about the Face of Boe. Mr Saxon has been refered to once so far, at the end of episode 1, in a radio interview - the interviewee said something like 'Mr Saxon is right, there is alien life out there'. I think he's only been refered to there, but I may have to go back and see if I can find any other references. It's being widely speculated on that Mr Saxon is in fact the Master, and I have to say that I rather hope he is! In the latest Confidential DT said that the Face of Boe isn't wrong, but neither is the Doctor, and that the truth lies somewhere in between... now, technically speaking the Master hasn't truly been a time lord since 'The Keeper of Traken' when he took up body-snatching. The other thing to watch out for is that apparently we'll find out at the end of the series who the Face of Boe is. Paul thinks that maybe he was another incarnation of the Master. It is odd that the has always refered to the Doctor as 'old friend', as Roger Delgado's Master used to refer to Jon Pertwee's Doctor... it's all rather intriguing, and in many respects I can't wait for the end of the series to find out!

Anyway, this week we have the return of the Daleks... the BBC website has changed, and so has my desktop wallpaper at work... I now have this rather fetching piccy! It looks really good... and we already know that it's a two-parter... can't wait!

Oh, and the Beeb are being really kind and putting online versions of the trailer up each week... which start with the fantastic split screen of the Doctor and Martha in homage to the classic Pearson cover for 'An Unearthly Child' that many of the fans have been replicating in their artwork since the 9th Doctor & Rose!
